Carter Is Coming

Markell Carter is playing for more than just redemption for being a sixth round draft pick. He is playing to make sure his family is properly supported. Andy Hart writes on the Patriots official page that Carter’s 21-year-old sister Keyarrie Hudson has Lupus and is going to be Carter’s roommate in this upcoming season. Carter was a mere round away from being undrafted and not being able to support his family like he can (he just received a bonus of over $150,000).
Carter did not have a Tebow or Suh rookie year. Instead, he had a year to sit on the bench, watch, and learn. He realized, first and foremost, he had to hit the weight room. Mark Daniels quotes Carter in his Boston Herald column “Pats DE Markell Carter bigger, better.” He writes, “My dad always told me in the morning, peanut butter and banana sandwiches. So, I mean, I’m eating like four or five of those a day.”
He is scarfing down the calories and working out the right way. He gained almost thirty pounds in this last year and it has made him stronger, faster, and an all around better athlete. Jeff Howe quotes Carter in his article “Markell Carter Adding Weight, Explosion In Hopes Of Breaking Through During Second Season With Patriots.” He writes, “Not just putting on the weight, but make sure it’s the weight that helps you function best for your position.” Carter is pushing himself for his sister and his team.
This is the first time he can report to rookie mini camp. This extra training, plus a season of memorizing a pro playbook, has made him smarter player. He has learned the Patriots defense and will add depth.
Depth is a necessity if the Pats want to get past Baltimore, Houston, and the Steelers this year. If Carter can produce in the pros like he did college, the Pats will be back to the show. Carter will give first round pick Chandler Jones rest on some snaps. If Carter can get three or four sacks and three or four TFL’s, he will be worth is salt. Carter’s depth could help drag the Pats out of the blackness of horrible defenses.
Late round draft picks like Carter are needed if teams are going to turn into dynasties. This year seems primed to be a break out year for Carter. He has grown into his body and added professionalism and smarts to the resume. He seems like just the man Bellichick looks for in the late draft.
