Bay Bridge Series Returns

The Bay Bridge Series returns Friday night and the battle for East and West bay bragging rights follows it. This season, with the teams in virtually identical situations in their respective divisions, it seems the Oakland A’s and the San Francisco Giants have a bit more to play for than in recent years.
This is one of my favorite series every year because (if it isn’t painfully obvious) I’m a diehard A’s fan but I live in San Francisco. This is the weekend where I feel the most pride sporting my colors. I wear every scrap of A’s paraphernalia I can find and welcome the jeering of the San Francisco faithful (and more importantly the unfaithful).
And today is a fine day for baseball.
The series kicks off tonight with Jarrod Parker going for the A’s and the flamethrower Barry Zito for the Giants, pitching against his former team.
I want the A’s to win tonight for selfish reasons. I want them to crush Barry Zito and send a message to the Giants fans that the A’s aren’t going to lie down. Usually, I don’t get greedy; I just want Oakland to be in every game and stay competitive but I want a blowout tonight.
There is really no rationality to it. The Giants are in a completely separate league and their success doesn’t affect the outcome of the A’s whatsoever.
It’s just a matter of pride. The last two years the A’s and Giant’s traded sweeps of each other. This year I want it all. I want to the green and gold to be the better team and for the entire city wearing orange and black to know it, whether they choose to admit it or not.
Pitchers to watch: Jarrod Parker for the A’s and Tim Lincecum for the Giants. Parker kicks off the series on Friday night and has shown he has the dominating stuff. He can make quick work of the Giants if he can locate his pitches.
Lincecum will pitch this weekend but we all know his capabilities. I am in the boat that thinks we’ve seen the best of Timmy, but I don’t think he is bad as his numbers have indicated this year. At some point he’ll figure it out; hopefully it’ll be after this series. The good news is the A’s don’t have to face Matt Cain or Madison Bumgarner.
Hitters to watch: Jemile Weeks for the A’s and Melky Cabrera. There is a lot of room in that San Francisco outfield. I just think Weeks is going to spray it all over the yard. He’ll come home to Oakland after this series multiple triples richer.
Cabrera is just a pain to deal with. He does everything fairly well and it seems when he goes, so go the Giants. The A’s would do well to keep him off the bases.
