Braves drop 5-2 decision to Tampa

The contest between the Rays and Braves turned in the third when starter Randall Delgado committed a cardnal sin. He walked two batters, and then a few hitters later, Matt Joyce deposited a grand slam in the right center. This staked Tampa to a 4-2 lead, and they coasted from there to a 5-2 victory. Atlanta’s last baserunner came during the fourth. The loss evened up the series in the first interleague match in the season. The other piece of good news is the Braves will end this day still on top of the NL East, regardless of what the Nats do against the surprising O’s. That game should be starting right about now.
Let me hit the topic you want to know about. Chipper Jones’ status. His left ankle got hit by a BJ Upton liner last night and became an Impressionist painting (lots of blacks, blues, yellows, a couple of browns, maybe a green here and there). It happened in the third and while Chipper gutted it out for a few more innings, he eventually benched himself in the seventh. Chipper wasn’t in the line-up today and will sit tomorrow as a precaution. He’ll probably be back on Monday in time for a four game set in Cincinnati. It’s a very disappointing road swing. Chipper is from the area, and a lot of neighbors and fans won’t be able to see him in Tampa for the last time as he completes his Farewell Tour. I’ll check in tomorrow if there is any more news on this or any other front.
