Mad Max 15

Tigers starter Max Scherzer’s (3-3) 15 strikeouts fell one strikeout shy of tying Mickey Lolich’s team record set back in 1969. Lolich struck-out 16 batters twice that season, and struck out 15 against the Boston Red Sox in 1972, the last Tiger pitcher to reach that mark. Carried by Scherzer’s arm the Tigers won their first interleague series of the season over the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 4-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park.

Scherzer lasted seven innings allowing two solo home runs, and four hits. It was a nice bounceback game for Scherzer who had a shaky start against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. The Tigers pitching staff struckout 41 Pirates over the three-game series, a new team record.

Even with the strong start from Scherzer, he left the game down 2-1 in the seventh. A double from Prince Fielder, and singles from Delmon Young and Alex Avila in the bottom of the inning led to three runs for the Tigers, and eventually the victory. Jhonny Peralta hit his second home run of the season to get the Tigers on the board in the fifth.

The Tigers offense is still in hiding as the team only managed five hits, and one walk against Pirates pitching. Ryan Raburn continues to disappoint with another hitless game, his batting average has dropped to .144 for the season. Brennan Boesch had his twelve game hitting streak snapped, and Don Kelly has one hit since replacing Austin Jackson in centerfield on Wednesday.

Closer Jose Valverde was still sidelined on Sunday which led to Joaquin Benoit assuming the role. He had a rough outing allowing a double, and throwing a wild pitch leading to the Pirates scoring one run before Benoit struck out Nate McLouth to end the game.

The Tigers will have an off day Monday before heading out on a 10-game road trip against the division leading Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, and Boston Red Sox.
