Texans on the brink of greatness?

The Houston Texans as a franchise have suffered through many years of dissappointing seasons and heartbreaking losses, but last year might have just changed all of that. The Texans won the AFC South with a 10-6 record despite losing their star pass rusher and pro bowl caliber QB to season-ending injuries. They won their first ever playoff game against the Bengals on January 7th, 2012 with their 3rd string, rookie QB TJ Yates calling the plays, but with the Texans strong defense and abusive run game, they tamed the Bengals 31-10.

Now comes arguably the most crucial off-seaon in Texans history becuase of all the high expectations now. They didn’t get off to a good start however, losing Mario Williams to the Buffalo Bills and then trading pro-bowl linebacker DeMeco Ryans and their 3rd round draft pick to the Philadelphis Eagles for a 4th round pick and a 3rd round pick in 2012. Houston also released OT Eric Winston who later signed with the Chiefs, and they also lost their kicker Neil Rackers who converted on 84% of his field goals last season. However, they were able to re-sign a key part to their offensive line with C Chris Myers. Then probably the biggest deal was when Houston re-signed 2-time pro bowl running back Arian Foster to a 5-year &43.5 million deal.  With many fans wanting the Texans to address the WR position in the draft, but shocked many when they took Whitney Mercilus the DE from Illinois.

This upcoming season is one that many fans are excited about and with good reason.  There are still some huge question marks headed into the season that need to be answered before this team can be considered in the upper echelon of the NFL.  Can Matt Schaub stay healthy?  He has been with the Texans for five seasons now and has only started all 16 games twice.  When he is on the field there is no doubt this offense is extremely deadly especially with the emergance of Foster over the last couple of seasons.  When Schaub is out however, this becomes a one-dimensional team where the QB is just asked not to mess up and be a game manager.  Can this defense continue their dominance from last season?  They have lost their team’s 3rd leading tackler and Jason Allen who led the team in interceptions.  The defense is what led the Texans last season and a big reason why they won their first playoff game.  If the Texans can stay healthy (we learned earlier in the week that Andre Johnson had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, expected to miss 3-4 weeks) and that potent defense then the 2012-2013 campaign might turn out to be the best Texans season ever.
