Braves Drop Fifth Straight

After a successful trip to Tampa, Atlanta got bombed out of Cincinnati. The long balls killed, and the Braves were swept in a four-game series. They’re back home in a pivotal tilt with the first-place Nationals. (Still can’t get used to typing that. Just imagine what it would be like if I had to type first-place Expos. Shudder). But in the first game, the Nats capitalized on a four-run first and made it stand in a 7-4 victory. The loss dropped Atlanta to 2 back of the Nats in the East.
Atlanta was hamstrung by the flu in that Cincinnati series, and the injuries have piled on. Brian McCann does not feel one-hundred percent, but he was pressed into service as David Ross tweaked a groin. Chipper is nowhere close to returning from his leg bruise. And Freddy Freeman eyes continue to plague him. Contacts and glasses have not solved the dry eye issue. (Lasik, maybe? Just throwing it out there.) In the last three weeks, Freeman has gone an anemic .180 from the plate. His average has cratered from .302 to .254. Freddy has been quoted as saying that he says two balls, and he just guesses. Doctors have rushed him special contacts and glasses. He prefers to play in contacts. The issue wasn’t rectified tonight. He went 0-5. So others like Martin Prado have to pick up the slack. Prado came through, going 3-5. He scored the Braves first run in the third after a triple during which outfielders Steve Lombardozzi and Rick Ankiel had a Keystone Kops moment. By the way, Jason Heyward hit his sixth home run of the year.
