A Critical Trip Begins

The Yankees started off a 9 game roadtrip with a solid 6 to 3 win over the Oakland A’s Friday night in Oakland.   They won in typical fashion by hitting 3 homeruns.  Robinson Cano hit a solo shot for New York.  Mark Teixeira and Nick Swisher each hit a 2 run shot in the victory.  Ivan Nova was decent against an awful hitting A’s team allowing 3 runs in 7 innings of work in getting his 5th win.  The win was The Bombers 3rd straight.  Despite their struggles so far if the playoffs started today the Yankees would be in as the second Wild Card.

This trip is critical for the Yank as we will see what this team is really made of.   After the in final 2 games in Oakland it is on to Anaheim for 3 and then Detroit for 3 more.  It will not be an easy final 6 games as they will face Jared Weaver , Dan Haren, and Justin Verlander in that stretch.  That propect is all the more tough as New York continues to be too reliant on the home run.  They are 0 and 10 in games they don’t hit one out.  The Yanks also continue to stink with runners in scoring position going just 2 for 10 Friday night dropping their average as a team to .223 in that category.  To beat good pitchers in the Major Leagues you need to get base hits with men on base or you lose.  It is really that black and white and this team simply does not do that.  Day in and day out they are constantly swinging from their heels and lacking in the clutch.   That is exactly why the Yankees have been so wildly inconsistent so far this year.

The Yankees really need to get all 3 games against the offensively challenged A’s and their league worst .210 batting average.  I would be happy with a 5-4 trip, and privately I think they would be too.  We will really see what they are made of as a group.  Will the Yanks be able to beat those 3 aces?  Do they have the ability to actually think small in key situations with guys on base and drive those runners in by any mean necessary?  They have to if they want to get of the ”schneide” in that critical area of the game.  The Yankees have way too much talent to be 24 and 21.  Yes they are still a tad beat up injury wise but that is an excuse.  If the 2012 Yankees want to get better they have to show a little more desire and play up to that talent.  These next 8 road games will show if the are actually capable of doing that.
