Prince and the Twin Cities

After a three-game sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Indians, and a dismal 9-13 record in the month of May the Tigers needed a remedy. The Minnesota Twins appear to be that magical elixir. With their win Saturday afternoon in Minnesota the Tigers won back-to-back games for the first time since April 18th against the Kansas City Royals.

In the first two games of their weekend series in Minneapolis the Tigers have scored 16 runs on 28 hits. A team that stranded 30 runners in Cleveland has only left nine men on base, and is 14-26 (.538) with runners in scoring position.

The offense has been led by Prince Fielder who followed a 3-5 night on Friday by going 4-4 Saturday afternoon. He has driven in three runs, and his batting average is now .311 for the season.

While the Tigers have not hit a home run during the series they have smacked nine doubles, and neither Twins starter has made it past the fifth inning. Every Tigers hitter with an at-bat has registered at least one hit.

Drew Smyly (2-1) pitched five innings on Friday night allowing three earned runs and six hits. On Saturday afternoon, Max Scherzer (4-3) picked up where he left off last week with nine strikeout over a rain-shortened 5 1/3 innings. The Tigers bullpen has allowed only one earned run over 6 2/3 innings with 11 strikeouts.

The Tigers have scratched their way back to within four games of the division-leading Indians who have lost two straight to the Chicago White Sox. The Tigers will be looking for their first three game sweep of the season since that same series against the Royals in April.

The Tigers will be looking for that sweep this afternoon with Rick Porcello (3-4, 5.29 ERA, 1.47 WHIP) starting against P.J. Walters (2-1, 2.95 ERA, 0.94 WHIP) for the Twins. First pitch is scheduled for 2:10 EST.
