Sweep Smell of Success

The Tigers finished off their first sweep in over a month with an impressive come from behind victory in Minnesota. The 4-3 victory along with another Cleveland Indians loss puts the Tigers three games back of the Tribe for first in the Central Division.
Down 3-2 in the top of the ninth inning, the Tigers rally started with a Quintin Berry single and stolen base followed by a Miguel Cabrera home run off of Matt Capps (0-3). Berry has filled in nicely for the injured Austin Jackson going 6-13 with two walks, four runs, and three stolen bases over the weekend. He added a spectacular catch to end the eighth inning.
Prince Fielder and Cabrera continued to smack around Twins pitching Sunday going a combined 4-8 with two walks. Cabrera’s home run was his ninth of the season, and 286th of his career.
While the Tigers pulled out a victory on Sunday the offense continued to mystify fans. After only leaving nine men on base during the first two games of the series, they left 10 on base Sunday, and grounded into three double plays. The Tigers are currently third in the majors with 44 double plays.
Tigers starter Rick Porcello pitched six innings allowing three runs on nine hits. A scary moment happened for Porcello in the third inning when a Joe Mauer liner hit him in the leg. Porcello was able to recover, and throw Mauer out at first, but was in pain afterward.
The bullpen combined to throw three innings of scoreless baseball with Brayan Villarreal (1-1) picking up his first major league victory. Jose Valverde allowed a walk and a hit, but managed to earn his ninth save of the season.
The Tigers will start a four-game series in Boston with a Memorial Day afternoon game tomorrow at 1:35pm. Doug Fister (0-2, 1.84 ERA, 1.13 WHIP) will start for the Tigers against Felix Doubront (4-2, 3.96 ERA, 1.42 WHIP) for the Red Sox.
