Braves Losing Streak Hits 8

Let’s get to the bad news first and then move on to the worse news and follow it up with the worst news. Atlanta lost to St. Louis 8-2 this Memorial Day. The Cards picked up four in the third and then plated two more in the fourth before Atlanta managed to bring up 2 in the fourth. Cardinal pitcher Lance Lynn ran his record to 8-1 (2-0 vs. Atlanta), while Tommy Hanson shouldered the loss to go 5-4. St. Louis hit two homers, one by Rafael Furcal and the other by Daniel Descalso. The worse news is the Braves are now on an eight-game losing streak after being swept this weekend by Washington. The fact that the Nats are in first make it especially galling. When this skein started, Atlanta was two games in first. Now they’re four back and tied with Philly in the NL East basement. Not only that, the Braves are 0-8 on Monday’s this season. That’s right. They have yet to win on a Monday. I thought Monday’s were supposed to be an off-day? Atlanta sure is wishing it would. As for the worst news, the entire team seems to have gone in a funk. Mike Minor’s troubles are well-documented. He’s giving up dingers at an alarming rate, and his ERA for May pushes 10. Jason Heyward has hit .190 this month. Michael Bourn’s OPB during the losing streak is .186. Dan Uggla’s average for the slide is .156 (but with two homers). And Freddy Freeman hasn’t gotten his eyewear problem fixed. He’s waiting on special glasses. The problem now is they have to be wraparound lenses so he can see the pitcher while at the plate. Under Armour and Oakley are working together. So the best minds are on it. Brian McCann started today. He’d been out with the flu. However, he went 0 for 4. At least June arrives very soon.
