4 More Years of Popeye Teixeira
Posted By Brendan Sennott On May 29 2012 @ 12:04 pm In New York Yankees | No Comments
The Yankees saw their modest 5 game losing streak end last night in Anaheim as Mark Trumbo hit a walkoff homer off Corey Wade propelling the Angels to a 9 t0 8 victory. The loss especially stung for New York as Angel Ace Jared Weaver walked off the mound in the top of the first inning after throwing just 12 pitches with an apparent back injury. The Yanks spotted Phil Hughes a 3 run lead in that inning that he immediately gave back. In 5.1 innings the shaky righty allowed 11 hits and 7 earned runs. The Bombers had their chances throughout the game, but like so many other times this season they simply could not come up with a big hit in a key spot when needed.
The Yankees accomplished what I had asked in sweeping the putrid A’s in Oakland over the weekend. The key was the hot bat of firstbasemen Mark Teixeira who went 8 for 14 in the series with 3 homers. He carried that burst into last nights game going 2 for 2 with a solo homer raising his average to a season high .263.
First off that last sentence is disturbing in its context because Yankee fans should not be happy with a guy in his prime making $22.5 million a season batting .263. What is really scary is that after Saturday’s win in which Teixeira went 4 for 5 with 2 homeruns and 5 RBI’s the Yankee First Sacker went all Popeye the Sailor and stated to the media, “Some guys can sort of shorten their swing up and slap it the other way, use their speed,” Teixeira said. “It’s obviously not me. I’ve been a guy that’s always hit a lot of fly balls, a lot of long fly balls, home runs. I’ve tried to change a few times and it hasn’t worked. … You can try to tinker with things, but I am who I am. I wouldn’t know how to explain what kind of hitter I am, I just go up there, see the ball and try to hit it really hard.” All that’s missing is a can of spinach and a huge man with a beard trying to knock him out. Most Yankee fans thought that A-Rod circa 2004 to 2008 was a headcase. Teixeira makes that A-Rod look like a member of M.E.N.S.A and Seal Team Alpha
Until 2010 when he batted just .256 Mark Teixeira had never played 140 games or more in the big leagues and batted below .281. Last season he batted .248. He sat at a nauseating .226 after the Yankees win over the Royals on Wednesday prior to flying to the West Coast where he heated up. Now a lot of the Teixeira-opologists will tell you his poor stats this year were caused by a severe upper respiratory infection that has hobbled him since early in the season. The Yankees credit sitting Tex in the 3 game set against the Reds last weekend for starting his turnaround as it helped him get on the road to recovery health-wise.
I think its all a load of garbage from his statements to the health issue. If he was sick he should have been placed on the disabled list. The Yankee brain trust needs to get this guy to stop thinking about the short porch in right in the Bronx and get him to watch some video of his younger days. Obviously he hit the ball to all fields back then. He needs to make adjustments at the plate based on the pitches he is thrown and do what he can with those pitches. Trying to jerk every pitch out of the yard will not get it done and is unacceptable for a guy with that contract. Now part of the problem may be that buffoon Kevin Long who I demanded be fired here. It has to be something and it has to be fixed immediately.
I mean enough is enough already. The guy should be way better than he is. I get it. He is phenomenal in the field and will hit 30 homers and drive in 100 runs. That is not enough for Teixeira. This Yankee club as constructed has no depth coming with any power from the minor leagues. Teixeira is signed for another 4 years. If he cannot go back to being a more complete hitter the team will have to adjust their personnel accordingly to cover up his flaws. If they don’t championships will become impossible. If Teixeira is going to continue to bat below .250 then the Yankees have to look to trade Curtis Granderson before thinking about sigining him to a long term extension prior to his contract expiring after the 2013 season. The Yanks almost certainly have to let Nick Swisher leave in free agency after this year. Yankee fans also have to hope that Long is not turning Robinson Cano into the type of hitter Tex, Granderson, and Swisher are. Those being mindless goons who try to hit homers all the time. It is quite disturbing as a follower of this team because those are the players on the roster in their primes outside of Brett Gardner who should be carrying this club. The Yankees and it’s fans are stuck with Mark Texieira for the next 4 years. We all better get something out of the relationship or it will be 4 long ones.
