Drew Smyly spent 3.2 innings outpitching Cy Young winner John Lester on Wednesday night and then nearly matching him for two more innings. He was holding the Red Sox scoreless until David Ortiz and rookie phenom Will Middlebrooks each hit 2 out 2 run homers to go a run up. With a Miguel Cabrera double in the 7th the Tigers went back to even only to lose it on an Adrian Gonzalez run scoring double in the 7th and a Kevin Youkilis homer in the 8th. The Tigers were unable to muster a response against the Red Sox bullpen and so clinched their own demise. This team just can’t seem to put everything together on a consistent basis.
