Wizards retain Wittman

In a move that says in no uncertain terms that the Wizards aren’t trying to win now they have retained coach Randy Wittman. Wittman had the Wizards go 18-31 for a .367 winning percentage last year, the second highest winning percentage his team has posted in his career (the 1999-2000 Cavs went 32-50 for a .390 winning percentage). Wittman was the coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2008 before being fired after a 4-15 start and replaced by long time executive and former Celtic great Kevin Mchale.

According to ESPN’s Ric Bucher the Wizards would have considered a higher profile coach if they received the top pick in Wednesday’s draft lottery.

This move isn’t all bad. No, 18-31 isn’t a good stretch at all but the players responded better to him than to Saunders and they did go through significant personnel change in the middle of the season. The Wizards are clearly working on improving with small steps for now and building towards the future. If the Wizards stay true to the .331 winning percentage Wittman teams have earned over his career though, it will only end in a pretty good draft pick and a definite coaching change at the end of the year.

This isn’t huge news for the Wizards but maybe it will be in a year or so. If the Wizards improve a little and Stan Van Gundy sits out a year, it wouldn’t be impossible to think Van Gundy would take over a young and talented team where he can potentially stick it to his two former employers (Miami and Orlando).
