Grandy’s Grand Slam Kills Tigers

The major league debut for Tigers pitcher Casey Crosby (0-1) quickly became a forgettable one after a second inning grand slam by Curtis Granderson. The five runs scored in the second helped propel the Yankees to a 9-4 victory over the Tigers Friday night at Comerica Park.
Crosby walked four batters before Granderson emptied the bases with his grand slam to right field giving the Yankees a 5-1 lead. Crosby finished the game after 3 1/3 innings giving up six earned runs with four hits and four walks.
Yankees starter C.C. Sabathia (7-2) continues to struggle against the Tigers at Comerica Park, but pitched well enough to earn the victory. In seven innings, Sabathia gave up three earned runs with eight hits, and two walks. It was Sabathia’s first win at Comerica Park since 2007 when he pitched for the Cleveland Indians.
The Tigers offense continues to struggle with runners on base. The team left eight men on base, and have now left at least eight on base in five of their last six games. After three more double plays last night the club is now tied for the major league lead with the Minnesota Twins at 56.
Quintin Berry continues to shine since his call-up from Toledo, and his Comerica Park debut was no different. Berry was 3-5 with a triple and double. He also scored two runs. His batting average since joining the Tigers on May 23rd is .364, and is going to create a difficult decision for manager Jim Leyland when Austin Jackson returns from the disabled list.
Luis Marte relieved Crosby in the fourth inning, and over 3 2/3 innings kept the Yankees off the scoreboard. He gave up two hits, and struck out three. Unfortunately, Brayan Villarreal and Octavio Dotel combined to give up three runs, three hits and two walks in two innings pitched. Dotel surrendered a two-run home run to Alex Rodriguez in the top of the ninth inning.
Andy Dirks was kept out of the starting lineup for a third straight game nursing a sore Achilles. Dirks was evaluated on Friday, and the Tigers reportedly will be calling up speedster Matt Young who left last night’s game in Toledo. Gerald Laird appeared to aggravate his right hamstring in the sixth inning. Laird was the designated hitter with Omir Santos catching for the first time this season.
Game two of this three game series is set for 7:05pm tonight. Hiroki Kuroda (4-6, 3.96 ERA, 1.37 WHIP) takes the mound for the Yankees against Rick Porcello (3-4, 5.21 ERA, 1.53 WHIP) for the Tigers.
