Irony: O’s win but Johnson loses save streak while Lester keeps his win streak vs. BAL

In an odd twist during Tuesday night’s Orioles-Red Sox game in which the Orioles won 8-6 in 10 innings, Baltimore’s Jim Johnson’s streak was broken while Boston’s Jon Lester’s vs. the Orioles continues.

Baltimore Orioles closer Jim Johnson had a 25-game save streak dating back to August of last season going into this game but it was soon broken up by Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia. With the O’s up by two runs and a runner on with two outs in the bottom of the 9th Saltalamacchia hit a 2-run homer to left just above the wall enough to hit the top padding on the wall which was under review for a fan who reached out and almost interfered.

After Johnson closed the inning out and the O’s got the lead back in the 10th thoughts started to turn up in people’s minds when O’s manager Buck Showalter decided to send Johnson back out there in the bottom of the 10th to try for the win after he had blown the save in the last inning, why did he decide to keep him in there?

Did he feel sorry for him that he had lost his streak? Was he trying to rest the remaining pitchers he had for the rest of the series? Or did he really believe that Johnson could go back out there, finish and get the win, which he ended up doing?

Boston Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester’s streak continues on for being undefeated against the O’s in his career. He is currently 14-0 in 20 starts now vs. Baltimore. He probably would have extended that streak if it wasn’t for his bullpen giving away the lead to the O’s in 7th inning after Lester had left the game, Lester left with a no decision. The Red Sox have now lost his last two starts vs. Baltimore, and he has had no decisions in both of them.

With this win in Boston the O’s have now extended their team streak with their sixth straight win at Fenway Park.
