Pee and Flee

Combining warm weather with the end of the quarter and the headaches of finals week can do a lot of things to people. It can drive them crazy studying or simply to the bars to celebrate the end of the quarter, athletes included.
Monday, Ohio State issued a statement saying that Meyer had suspended senior tight end Jake Stoneburner and junior offensive tackle Jack Mewhort after they were arrested by police on a misdemeanor charge of obstructing official business. The school said it had no further comment. Stoneburner and Mewhort were arrested around 2:30 a.m. Saturday by police in Shawnee Hills, northwest of Columbus, near Muirfield Village Golf Club, where the Memorial Tournament was being held. Police spotted Stoneburner, whose family lives on the Muirfield course, Mewhort and another man, who has no connection with the football team, urinating on the side of a restaurant near Stoneburner’s house. When police shined their spotlight on them, the three men ran not knowing the light belonged to police, according to the player’s lawyer, Mark Collins. Stoneburner and Mewhort were stopped about 40 yards away, apparently football players take their 40 yard dash time seriously, but only those 40 yards.
Their arraignment is June 11, but Collins said he hopes to get the issues solved before then. In the meantime, Ohio State has barred the players, whom coach Urban Meyer had claimed to be two of the team’s leaders, from all activities and the football facilities.
On a two-deep chart released after the Buckeyes’ spring practice period ended, Stoneburner was listed as the starter at tight end and Mewhort at left tackle. Stoneburner caught 14 passes a year ago, seven for touchdowns, tied for the team lead in a dreadful passing offense. During the spring, Meyer said Stoneburner, a 6-foot-5, 245-pounder is one of the top playmakers on a team in dire need of players who can make big plays. With tight ends playing a major role in Meyer’s offense, many Buckeye fans envision Stoneburner having the type of impact Aaron Hernandez did at University of Florida, which would be a vast difference compared to the Tressel offense. This setback may force both Stoneburner and Mewhort to work harder in practice but both are still expect to retain their starting positions when they return to the lineup in the fall.
While, both players are suspended indefinitely, and rightfully so, it is not expected for the suspension to go any further than the September 1st matchup between the RedHawks of Miami(Ohio) University.
