Anyone who has ever been involved in a race knows there is a difference between a time trial and a real run.  A time trial just helps you get the car(or bike) dialed in.  It’s a way to see how it will react to different variables including tweaks to the vehicle, driving techniques, and track conditions, with the hope being when that the actual race comes, you can dump the clutch, let her rip, and of course win the race.  The Miami Heat have reached that point.  Tonight’s game in Boston is a single elimination race, at least for the Heat.  All of the tweaking and adjusting should be done, so Miami needs to start fast and run hard throughout Game 6 if they want there to be a Game 7.

The NBA is a stat-driven league, just like most other professional sports.  This game is not going to be about numbers, it’s going to be about heart.  I don’t care how much LeBron does in the first half or even how many points DWade scores in the fourth quarter.  If Miami wants to win this game, they will have to go all out on both ends of the floor.  When the Celtics beat the Heat in Game 5, Boston seemed to get every loose ball and escape every time Miami looked to be pulling away.  Towards the end of the game, Wade was the one crashing the boards the hardest.  He’s a 6’4″ guard.  The Heat front line should be ashamed of themselves.

The good news for fans in South Florida is that Miami has a chance to redeem themselves, and don’t let the national media fool you, it’s a damn good chance.  This is a game in “The Garden” that could be a signature win for any player on the Heat, but most likely it won’t be about numbers, it will be about making big plays at the right time.  A rebound, steal, a big shot, or maybe even a blocked shot that doesn’t somehow turn into a 3-pointer for the Celtics.  It could be James, Wade, Bosh, or maybe someone new like Norris Cole.  The point is, everyone who gets on the floor for Miami in Game 6 needs to be playing like it’s their last game.  Because if they don’t, it just might be.
