Arrieta continues to slump, he and the O’s get shelled by Phills

Baltimore Orioles pitcher Jake Arrieta had high expectations coming from the fans this season, especially after he started and won on Opening Day vs. the Twins back in April, giving a good pitching performance. But his latest schlacking in an interleague game Friday night vs. the Phillies along with the other games before then have added on to a dreaded downhill slump for Arrieta.

Arrieta let in nine earned runs (six in the 2nd inning alone) gave up eleven hits in four innings and now has lost his last four starts and six of his last seven. Five of those runs came from the bat of Shane Victorino in this 9-6 loss. Even the hard fighting back from the offense and the smooth cleaning up from his bullpen couldn’t prevent Arrieta suffering another loss giving him a 2-8 record on the year.

His last win was May 2nd this season @ New York Yankees where he went eight innings, gave up no runs, five hits and nine strikeouts.

Two former Orioles returned to Camden Yards to play against their old team: Ty Wigginton and Mike Fontenot. Wigginton was a former All-Star for Baltimore when he was elected as the O’s representative for the first time in his career in 2010. Fontenot was once the O’s number one prospect who was traded in 2005 along with Jerry Hairston Jr. and pitcher Dave Crouthers to the Cubs in the Sammy Sosa deal.

The O’s latest loss helped the Phillies snap a six game losing streak and help pitcher Joe Blanton break his losing streak of three losses in four starts. The series lead lifetime is 24-22 O’s.
