Cubs vs.Twins Game 2 Preview

After their tough 8-7 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Friday, the Chicago Cubs look to bounce back in game two of the three game inter-league series. Both teams are at the bottom of their respective divisions, but the Twins have won eight out of their last ten games. Saturday’s game will feature Twins starting pitcher Scott Diamond who is 4-1 with a 1.86 ERA. The Cubs will definitely have their work cut out for them. The North Siders have lost three in a row, and have dropped seven out of their last ten contests, winning only one game in the month of June. The Cubs had as much as a three run lead going into the fifth inning lead by a combined three homeruns from Alfonso Soriano and Starlin Castro. Unfortunately the Cubs bullpen didn’t come through down the stretch, and the Twins rallied and gave the Cubs their second straight loss in extra innings.
One of the bright spots for the Cubs has been Alfonso Soriano. He now has 11 homeruns with 37 RBIs, with at least one hit in eight of his last ten games. Soriano had zero homeruns before May 15. This is the best homerun stretch by anyone in the majors so far this season. Due to his sore right knee, Soriano has been playing DH instead of LF which has been a blessing for the Cubs.
Jeff Samardzija will start game two of the series. He is 5-3 with a 3.13 ERA. The Cubs have lost three out of the last four games started by Samardzija. He has given up at least six hits during this stretch, with a no decision in his last start against the San Francisco Giants. The Cubs pitching has to get better as they are 15th in the NL with an ERA of 4.31, and last in the NL in walks with 222 this year. The Cubs had plenty of runs to win the Friday‘s game, but runs given up by relievers Randy Wells, James Russell, and Shawn Camp proved to be the deciding factor in the game.
