The Suicide Reds

The Cincinnati Reds beat the Tigers 6-5 with a ball that traveled about 60 feet Friday night at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati. Miguel Cairo led off the bottom of the tenth inning with a triple mishandled by Matt Young in right field, and two batters later Wilson Valdez laid down a perfect bunt scoring Cairo, and earning the Reds the victory.
The Tigers fell behind early with another shaky start from Rick Porcello. Porcello pitched five innings giving up nine hits, two walks and four runs. With the Reds run in the first inning Friday night, Porcello has now allowed 18 runs in the first inning this season through 12 starts.
Reds first baseman Joey Votto gave the Reds a 4-0 lead in the third inning with a 3-run home run to center field. It was the 10th of the season for Votto, and he now has a 14 game hitting streak. The Reds offense tagged Tigers pitching for 15 hits, but left 11 men on base.
The Tigers got on the board in the fourth inning with a Brennan Boesch solo home run to right field. It was his sixth of the season, and he was 3-4 on the night with 2 RBI’s. After tying the game in the seventh, Delmon Young gave the Tigers the lead with a solo homer to left field that traveled 433 feet. It was his fifth of the season, and only hit of the night.
Unfortunately the Tigers bullpen did not keep the lead for long. Jose Ortega made his major league debut in the bottom of the seventh relieving Duane Below, and promptly surrendered a pinch-hit double to Todd Frazier scoring Cairo from second. Phil Coke (1-2) pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing only the triple to Cairo, and his game-winning run.
Reds starter Mat Latos scattered seven hits through 6 1/3 innings. Sam LeCure (2-1) pitched a hitless final two innings, striking out three.
Game two of this inter-league series is tomorrow at 4:05pm. The Tigers will start Justin Verlander (5-4, 2.67 ERA, 0.97 WHIP), who will try to avoid a fourth-straight loss against Bronson Arroyo (2-4, 3.91 ERA, 1.33 WHIP) for the Reds.
