Game 2 Preview: Cubs vs. Red Sox

In the first game of the series with these two historic teams, the Chicago Cubs were able to shutout the Boston Red Sox with a 3-0 victory Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field. Jeff Samardzija (5-4) will be looking to bounce from his last start in which he gave up eight earned on nine hits in 3.2 innings. The Cubs have lost four out of the last five games Samardzija has started. The month of June has been rough for the Cubs, but they have recently won three out of five games, and are looking to uphold their second two game winning streak of the month.
At this point in the season the Cubs need to use anything positive as a confidence boost. Carlos Marmol was finally able to close a ball game after losing his closer role earlier this season. Marmol was able to survive a bases loaded jam in the ninth to seal the victory, which could do wonders for his mindset, and the team’s morale as a whole. Ryan Dempster’s performance Friday, should help push the Cubs in the right direction, but only time will tell.
Jon Lester will be starting for the Red Sox. Lester is 3-4 this season with a 4.57 ERA, and has not won in his last four starts on the mound, giving up a combined 30 hits in those starts. The Red Sox have had a tough month as well losing eight out of thirteen in the month of June. With Josh Beckett now on the 15-day DL, he will miss Sunday night’s start. This means that the Red Sox will need a solid outing on Saturday if they want to have a chance to win this series.
