Hammel gives his bullpen a much needed rest

Back in February of 2012 Dan Duquette, Executive Vice-President of Baseball Operations for the Baltimore Orioles made a trade with the Colorado Rockies that sent pitcher Jeremy Guthrie to the Rockies in exchange for pitchers Jason Hammel and Matt Lindstrom. Jason Hammel just won his seventh game of the season with a complete, one hit shutout game vs. the Atlanta Braves on Saturday night, his last complete game was back in 2009. Tonight after not pitching past the sixth inning in his last two starts (which were no decisions) Hammel has picked up his first win since back on May 25th vs. the Royals.
The O’s won by a score of 5-0, and Hammel held a no hitter through six and two thirds innings until Jason Heyward of the Braves broke up the no hitter in the 7th with a single to left. Hammel came into this game with an 0-3 record and a 9.00 ERA vs. Atlanta in his career.
This was the first Orioles one hit shutout game since 2000 in a game vs. the Twins. If Hammel had completed the no hitter it would have been the first in O’s history since July, 13, 1991 where four pitchers combinded for a no hitter vs. the Oakland Athletics.
The Braves Michael Bourn had a 14-game hitting streak coming into this game, but the O’s broke that tonight as Bourn went 0-4 in the game.
