On Friday night, the Colorado Rockies scored eight runs in the top of the 10th inning to beat the Tigers 12-4. Unfortunately, the baseball season does not stop for such heart wrenching defeats, and the Tigers looked to rebound Saturday afternoon. Riding the arm of Doug Fister, and the bat of Miguel Cabrera the Tigers won 4-1 over the Rockies at Comerica Park.
Fister (1-3) returned from the disabled list, and pitched six scoreless innings. He threw only 82 pitches, allowing three hits while striking out six Rockies hitters. Relievers Phil Coke and Joaquin Benoit finished the game allowing only one unearned run.
Cabrera went 2-4 hitting his 14th home run of the season. Cabrera also had a “little league” home run in the fifth when he scored after two throwing errors by the Rockies.
Austin Jackson walked four times, and continues to show patience at the plate. He now has 27 walks, and an OBP of .416 for the season.
Rockies starter Christian Friedrich (4-3) threw only 48 of his 98 pitches for strikes, and lasted only five innings. He walked five, gave up three hits, and three runs. He also started Cabrera’s “home run” when he threw the ball past first baseman Todd Helton.
The Tigers are slowly putting a team back together that has been missing some key components. The strong return from Jackson followed by a classic Fister start bring with them some optimism. Alex Avila is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment this week with hopes of returning for the Tigers series in Pittsburgh. Even the fan’s latest scapegoat Ryan Raburn is 4-11 since his return from Toledo last week.
The Tigers finish their series with the Rockies this afternoon at Comerica Park. With the first pitch from Max Scherzer (5-4, 5.76 ERA, 1.59 WHIP) scheduled for 1:05pm. The Rockies will start Jeremy Guthrie (3-5, 6.91 ERA, 1.75 WHIP)
