Max Scherzer Strikes Again

The Tigers have played some of their best baseball during inter-league series over the past few seasons, and the 2012 campaign is no different. After, a Max Scherzer led, 5-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies today at Comerica Park, the Tigers are now 8-4 in inter-league play this season, and 78-42 since 2006.

Scherzer (6-4) dominated the Rockies today, even after a 53-minute rain delay, throwing eight scoreless innings, striking out 12 Rockies batters, and walking none. Scherzer now has 100 strikeouts on the season, which has him in second place in the American League behind teammate Justin Verlander.

The Tigers offense was fueled by Quintin Berry’s 5-5 day, and multi-hit games from Gerald Laird, Ramon Santiago, and Austin Jackson. The only Tigers starter not to get on base was Brennan Boesch who went 0-12 in the weekend series with one walk.

Max Scherzer dominated the Colorado Rockies for eight innings Sunday afternoon.

Miguel Cabrera made only his second start of the season as the designated hitter, and went 1-4 with an RBI. Don Kelly started for Cabrera at third base.

While Scherzer pitched beautifully for the Tigers it was another story for Rockies starter Jeremy Guthrie (3-6), and the rest of the Rockies pitching staff. Guthrie did not return from the rain delay, but he had already surrendered four runs on eight hits.

While Alex Avila will begin a rehab assignment this week in Toledo, the club did not have optimistic things to say about Andy Dirks. Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski stated that Dirks might not return until after the All-Star break from his Achilles injury. In other news, Jacob Turner will be called up from Toledo to start on Thursday. Turner is 3-3 with a 2.83 ERA in 11 starts with Toledo and Lakeland this season.

The Tigers will have an off day tomorrow, but return to inter-league play on Tuesday evening against the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals. Justin Verlander (6-4, 2.66 ERA, 0.97 WHIP) will start for the Tigers against Lance Lynn (10-2, 2.42 ERA, 1.09 WHIP). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05PM at Comerica Park.
