Cowboys Consider Trading Dez Bryant?

Rumors have begun to spring up over the possibility of a Dez Bryant trade. Now I cannot sit here and say that Bryant is untradeable, but the likelihood of Bryant being shipped out of town should be slim to none.

First of all, it makes little sense to send off a young budding wide receiver who has shown flashes of being a top performer in the league, as well as someone the Cowboys felt strongly enough to trade up to get in the first round of the 2010 draft. Stephen Jones, who feels strongly that Dez should be a WR1, and with the control of the organization slowly drifting his way, and I mean slowly, there is personal investment in Bryant. Another point to assert would be what the Cowboys would get in return for a young, high upside talent like Dez? Probably not anything that would be considered an even swap. Organizations will not be willing to part with talented players Larry Fitzgerald or a Calvin Johnson, not to specifically compare Bryant to the two or even say that he holds the same value, but simply to state a trade would likely send subpar talent to Bryant in comparison or the Cowboys would want more than he is currently worth neither of which seems plausible.

The effect on the offense would also be prevalent if the team were to trade Dez, as he is their one receiver who has shown an ability to go up and get the jump ball, something Miles Austin and Jason Witten are not well known for. Rumors have included a possible Dez Bryant for Percy Harvin, who has recently asked for a trade, deal with some saying it would be great for the team. This really would not be in the best interest of the Cowboys, though Harvin is clearly a talented player, Bryant has more upside as a go-to receiver and Harvin would leave the wide receiving core somewhat undersized.

While there have been rumblings of unhappiness with Bryant within the Cowboys organization, the idea that they would give up on a player like Bryant so soon just wouldn’t make sense despite the off the field issues and sideline antics. Fans should take these rumors with a grain of salt during a somewhat dull off-season that has been mired by the Bounty scandal, and seems to have the media scouring for stories.
