Rays make 7 roster moves, get rained out

Despite their game against the Philadelphia Phillies getting rained out tonight, it was still a busy day for the Rays, as they made 10 changes to their active roster.

The first change they made was putting outfielder Matt Joyce on the 15-day disabled list. This is a big blow to the Rays, as Joyce has been one of the players who has stepped up in Evan Longoria’s absence, as he is hitting .279/.387/.512 with 34 RBI’s and a team-high 11 home runs.

Reliever Joel Peralta, who was ejected from Tuesday’s game for having an illegal substance inside his glove and subsequently suspended, dropped his appeal today and will begin to serve his 8-game suspension. Peralta is 0-3 with a 4.20 ERA with 2 saves and a team-high 16 holds.

The Rays also optioned outfielder Rich Thompson back to Durham and DFAed infielder Drew Sutton. Thompson had just 1 hit in 17 AB’s while Sutton was hitting .271 with 4 doubles in 48 AB’s.

To take Peralta’s spot in the bullpen while he’s serving his suspension, the Rays called Brandon Gomes back up from Durham. In Gomes’ first stint with the club, he had a 5.87 ERA in 7.2 innings.

The Rays also activated infielder Jeff Keppinger from the disabled list, and infielder Brooks Conrad, whom the Rays claimed off of waivers from Milwaukee on Thursday, reported to the team. Keppinger was hitting .295 in 88 AB’s before getting hurt, while Conrad had just 3 hits in 40 AB’s with the Brewers but 2 of those hits were homers.

The Rays and Phillies will play a double-header on Sunday to make up for today’s game.
