Winning on the road continues to be a struggle for the Chicago Cubs as they fall 10-5 against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night. The Cubs are now 10-28 on the road this season. A six-run fourth inning by the Diamondbacks ,against Paul Maholm, highlighted the game. Maholm pitched 3.1 innings giving up six earned on nine hits with three walks, and no strike outs. He has not recorded a win in his last eight starts, but Maholm did hit a two-run shot in the fourth inning to give the Cubs a brief 2-1 lead.
The Diamondbacks have now won three straight games, and have scored at least nine runs in three out of the last four games. The Diamondbacks recorded 16 hits in Saturday’s game. Arizona reliever Craig Breslow received the win, increasing his record to 2-0. Diamondbacks starter Ian Kennedy pitched 4 1/3 giving up five earned on 10 hits with two strike outs, but no decision.
The two bright spots for the Cubs were David DeJesus and Starlin Castro. Each player combined for eight hits in nine plate appearances. Castro continues to be stellar. He has notched at hit in each of his last seven games. Castro started off the week with two straight games with three hits, and finished Saturday’s game with four, upping his batting average to .308.
The series finale will be Sunday afternoon at Chase Field. The pitching match up will feature Cubs starter Matt Garza. Garza is 3-5 with a 4.07 ERA. The righty won his last start against the White Sox after not recording a win in his previous seven starts. Garza will be facing Diamondbacks pitcher Wade Miley. Miley is 8-3 with an ERA of 2.30. The Diamondbacks left-hander has recorded eight strike outs in his last two outings. The Chicago Cubs will look to cool off the rolling Diamondbacks, and avoid a three game sweep.
