Rays lose 8-0, but bullpen gets day off

The Kansas City Royals got to starting pitcher Alex Cobb early and often in the Rays’ 8-0 loss, but he was able to settle down and pick up his first career complete game. However, Cobb was overshadowed by his counterpart, Luke Hochevar.

The Royals picked up a run in the bottom of the first inning, when Alex Gordon hit a leadoff double and later scored on a double by Mike Moustakas. The Royals’ bats then exploded in the third inning, picking up five runs on seven hits, all of which were singles.

After giving up another run in the fourth inning, Cobb would settle down, giving up just one hit, an Eric Hosmer homer, over the last four innings. Although Cobb allowed eight runs on 13 hits, he didn’t walk a single batter and had just one strikeout, so his pitch-count stayed low enough for him to pitch a complete game. This was very important, because the Rays played a double-header against the Philadelphia Phillies yesterday, and Cesar Ramos, Wade Davis, and Brandon Gomes all had to pitch 2.2 innings in the second game.

Meanwhile, the run the Royals scored in the first inning proved to be enough for Hochevar, who scattered seven singles and one walk through nine innings en route to his fourth career complete game and second shutout. He struck out eight, and threw 113 pitches.

The Rays will look to bounce back tomorrow, with Chris Archer (0-1, 1.50 ERA) taking the mound against Bruce Chen (6-6, 4.81 ERA). The game starts at 8:10 ET.
