Former player and HOF inductee Oates becomes new Caps head coach

Former NHL player Adam Oates has been named the new head coach of the Washington Capitals making him the 16th head coach in franchise history. Oates, 49, comes to or actually comes back to Washington after being an assistant coach for the New Jersey Devils for the past two seasons. He actually started his coaching career with the Tampa Bay Lightning as an assistant coach in 2009-2010.

Adam Oates takes over now for former head coach and his former teammate Dale Hunter who stepped down to try to spend more time with his family in Canada. Oates played 19 seasons in the NHL, six of them with the Capitals (’96-’01) where he used to don a sweater with the captain “C”, and now he will be sporting a suit the behind bench. He and Hunter were on the ’97-’98 Capitals team, which was the last one in franchise history to make the Stanley Cup finals.

Other teams that Oates has played for in his 19 year career are the: Detroit Red Wings (’85-’88), St. Louis Blues (’89-’91), Boston Bruins (’91-’96), Philadelphia Flyers (’01-’02), Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (now the Anaheim Ducks) (’02-’03), and the Edmonton Oilers (’03-04). He has 1,420 points in 1,337 games in his career.

Recently Oates was into the Hockey Hall of Fame’s 2012 class along with Joe Sakic, Pavel Bure, and Mats Sundin, the ceremony is to be held November 12th in Toronto. Being a five time All-Star (’91, ’92, ’93, ’94, ’97) and sixth all time in assists Oates holds the record for the oldest player to lead the league in assists in a single season (’01-’02, 64 assists, age 39).
