The Chicago Cubs got their first home run from Anthony Rizzo in a 3-2 victory over the Houston Astros Saturday afternoon. The emergence of Rizzo has the city of Chicago buzzing about the future of the Cubs. This is what Cubs fans were hoping for all along. Everyone knew this season would be a struggle, but positive signs is all it takes to keep the fans on the bandwagon, and Anthony Rizzo has been just that. His two run shot was his second game winning hit in four games, since being brought up from Triple-A.
Cubs starter Matt Garza struggled, giving up a total of nine hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings. Fortunately for him, he only gave up two earned runs, and the Cubs bullpen did their part in not giving up anymore runs for the rest of the game. Garza is now 4-6 with a 4.01 ERA, and has won two out his last three starts. Carlos Marmol was able to finish off yet another game making it seven saves in the last nine games for him. He has really bounced back strong after being removed as the regular closer earlier in the season.
After losing the first three games of the season series, the North Siders have grabbed the last two games, and look to even the series with a win on Sunday. The pitching match up will feature Astros starter Wandy Rodriguez. The lefty is 6-5 with an ERA of 3.52. He will be facing Cubs starting pitcher Travis Wood. The left-hander Wood is 2-3 with a 3.54 ERA.
The Cubs victory on Saturday makes it four wins during this six game home stand, allowing no more than three runs in these four wins at home. After this series concludes Sunday afternoon at Wrigley Field, the Cubs will begin a seven game road trip against the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets.
