Rim Rocking Notes: Free Agency Fireworks before the 4th

Fireworks sparked off in the NBA a day early with the news of multiple free agent signings and rumors of potential signings that continue to keep fans salivating.

No signing was bigger than that of Deron Williams who returned to the Brooklyn Nets to the tune of 5 years¬† $100 million. Williams announced his return via Twitter/lockerz saying “Made a very tough decision today” and posting a picture of the Nets logo.

Williams was the biggest domino to fall in this Summer’s free agent class and the second tier free agents will now begin to find homes or return home as is the case with Williams.

The Nets also acquired Reggie Evans from the Clippers for either a 2017 or 2018 second round pick. Evans will make $5 million over the next 3 years as a result of the deal.

Brooklyn stayed in the news with their continued pursuit of the Orlando Magic’s Dwight Howard. The Nets are trying to put together a deal with Brook Lopez, Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks and their first round picks in 2013, 2015, and 2017 for Howard. The Nets would also “help” Orlando out by taking the contracts of Hedo Turkgolu or Jason Richardson.

Orlando is also fielding offers from the L.A. Lakers regarding Howard centered around Andrew Bynum and Metta World Peace. That deal is far from what the Magic hope to get but its a modest start.

The Lakers also have entered the running for the services of Steve Nash. It would most likely take a sign and trade to get Nash to L.A. but its also a place he said it would be hard for him to play.  The Raptors, Mavs, and Knicks are also making their respective bids for Nash. Toronto has already offered him a 3 year $36 million deal over the weekend.

The Raptors also offered Landry Fields a deal worth $20 million over 3 years in a move that might hamper the Knicks from obtaining Nash.

The Knicks also have to worry about re-signing Jeremy Lin who is meeting with the Houston Rockets and receiving interest from the Mavs who have to switch gears as a result of Williams spurning them. Lin and Goran Dragic seem to be drawing interest from the same teams with both the Rockets and Mavs in need of a floor general.

The Mavs have to consider matching the offer the Boston Celtics gave Jason Terry. The super-sub has tentatively agreed to a 3 year $15.6 million offer with the C’s. Terry has given the Mavs the opportunity to match but it is unlikely that they will.

The Celtics still hope to re-sign Ray Allen who is meeting with the L.A. Clippers and Miami Heat later this week. The signing of Terry makes it unlikely that Allen will want to stay in Beantown but the Celtics are hopeful.

Eric Gordon is ready to leave the New Orleans Hornets after agreeing to a max offer from the Phoenix Suns worth $58 million over 4 years. The Hornets have every intention of matching the offer but Gordon indicated on Twitter that they would let him walk. New Orleans could facilitate a sign and trade if Gordon is truly hell bent on going to Phoenix.

All of this on just day three of free agency. More rumors and official signings to come.
