Wings strike out on Carle, What Options Remain?

Another defenseman coveted by the Wings has signed elsewhere after 27 years old Matt Carle signed a 6 year deal in Tampa Bay, where Carle will be making 5.5 mil per year. A price that I am glad the Wings avoided.

After losing out on both Ryan Suter and Zach Parise yesterday in addition to Carle, many Red Wings fans feel like this is the time to hit the panic button and they have good reasons for doing so. The top remaining defensive UFA is St. Louis’s Carlo Colaiacovo. The 29 year old isn’t exactly something that makes fans jump out of their seats. Besides him the UFA pile for defenseman doesn’t provide much but 3rd pairing role players. On the Forward side things do look a little brighter with the talents of players like Phoenix’s Shane Doan and Washington Capitals Alexander Semin. However, Doan is waiting until July 9th when more information regarding Phoenix’s financial future will surface and it seems that Semin will be commanding north of 7 million per year, something that Red Wings GM Kenny Holland will surely be hesitant to pay.

The Wings have quite a bit of cap space, $16,832,955 to be exact and even if they resign RFA’s Kyle Quincey and Justin Abdelkader, the Wings will still have around 11.5 million dollars to work with. That is enough money to make some moves however if Holland feels that their aren’t any free agents of the caliber that can help the Wings he may look at the trade rout. The Wings have been tied to many players including the Blue Jackets Rick Nash, Anaheim’s  Bobby Ryan and Phoenix’s  Keith Yandle. Personally, I feel that the price for Nash is way to steep and I would avoid that rout. In my opinion the way to go is not doubt to trade for Keith Yandle. The 25 year old is one of the best young defenseman in the game and for his price($5,250,000 per year) he would be a great steal for the Wings.

What the Wings would have to give up to get Yandle is not really known. The Coyotes are in a state of collapse and we may be able to get him for much less than what a defenseman of his caliber is worth. A trade that would send Jakub Kindl, Cory Emmerton, a mid-level prospect like Joakim Andersson and a 1st and 3rd round pick may do the trick. However, I may be totally off and that trade proposal would be completely in favor of Pheonix, but hey what do I know? In addition to this, if we could sign either Doan or Semin plus a solid, big 3rd pairing guy would make the Wings team look much better, maybe a guy like former Flame Scott Hannan.

By doing this trade the Wings could have the following defensive lineup, something that doesn’t look too bad.

Yandle – White

Kronwall – Smith

Ericsson – Quincey

Scratched: Hannan

If the Wings can’t get Yandle, they maybe should try to go after another Pheonix defenseman, the young Swede Oliver Ekman-Larson. He would probably be cheaper but he does come with a bigger risk factor and isn’t as developed as Yandle. Regardless of what the Red Wings do I will keep my faith in Ken Holland and what he believes is best for the team. These next days will truly be very interesting.
