Kyle Quincey files for arbitration

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Kyle Quincey has filed for salary arbitration. The restricted free agent filed for it prior to yesterdays 5pm deadline.
Considering what the market for defenseman of Quinceys age and quality is looking like it makes perfect sense for him to go to arbitration. This means that the Wings and Quincey will still be able to negotiate a new contract however if a new contract hasn’t been agreed upon by July 20th an arbitrator will determine the salary for the next season. This also means that Quincey can’t recieve offer sheets from other teams.
Quincey made a salary of 3.5 million last season and will no doubt be looking for a raise. Although he struggled last season after being acquired at the trade deadline, the 26 year old could be looking at a 1-year, 4.25 million dollar deal with the Wings.
Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland spoke to Mlives Anser Khan about the decision .
“Today was something that needed to happen to put pressure on both of us to negotiate a deal in a timely fashion,’’ Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said. “It’s just part of the process. I made an offer. They never really gave me a (counter) offer. We had one sit down meeting before the draft. It puts a deadline on both sides.’‘
The Red Wings other restricted free agent, forward Justin Abdelkader, chose to not file for arbitration. 15 other players from across the league chose to go to arbitration including St. Louis’s T.J. Oshie and David Perron.
Overall, this really won’t affect the Wings plans as they still have plenty of cap space and Quincey would be signed eventually anyways. All this really does is to put pressure on both of the parties to come to a decision.
