Rays’ bats show up early in 10-3 win

The Tampa Bay Rays pounded out 13 hits and drew eight walks en route to a nice 10-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

The Rays jumped on Justin Masterson early, as Desmond Jennings singled on the very first pitch of the game. He then scored when Ben Zobrist hit a one-out home run, his 11th of the season, giving the Rays a 2-0 lead.

The Indians would then immediately get those two runs back off of Alex Cobb, loading the bases with no outs and then scoring a run on a double-play ball and then adding a second run on a balk.

The Rays would then retake the lead in the third inning on a big two-out two-run single by Jose Lobaton, making it a 4-2 game. The Rays would then hold on to the lead for the rest of the game.

The Rays really blew the game wide open with a big fifth inning. After B.J. Upton led off the inning with a single, Luke Scott would end his dreadful 0-for-41 stretch with two-run homer. With one out in the inning, Lobaton singled and Will Rhymes walked, knocking Masterson out of the game. Elliot Johnson then greeted the new pitcher, Nick Hagadone, with a two-run double, making it an 8-2 game. Jennings and Carlos Pena both followed by drawing walks, loading the bases. Zobrist then plated Johnson with a sacrifice fly, and Upton then hit his second single of the inning, driving in Jennings and giving the Rays a 10-2 lead.

Although the Indians would get one run back in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Shin-Soo Choo RBI single, Cobb and the bullpen would cruise the rest of the way to a 10-3 victory. Cobb went six innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four. He picked up his fourth win of the season. Kyle Farnsworth, Wade Davis, and Burke Badenhop would then each work a scoreless inning, allowing a combined three hits while striking out two and walking none.

The series continues tomorrow at 6:05 ET, with Matt Moore (5-5, 4.17 ERA) taking on Ubaldo Jimenez (7-7, 4.59 ERA), and then the first half of the season ends on Sunday with James Shields (8-5, 4.11 ERA) taking on Zach McAllister (3-1, 3.93 ERA).
