Holmström not going anywhere, a “Red Wing for Life”

After a report was posted by the Swedish newspaper Expressen stating that Tomas Holmström may play for another NHL team this season a lot of speculation around his future occurred. However, in an interview with Detroit News [1], Holmström said that it was Red Wings or bust for him.

Holmström said the report was not true at all and that he couldn’t imagine himself playing elsewhere this season. Homer will be talking to Ken Holland in the upcoming week about his future, and he believes that there is still room for him on Detroits roster, per Detroit News.

Will there be room for Holmstrom, 39, even if he does want to return for another season?

The Wings signed forwards Mikael Samuelsson and Jordin Tootoo in free agency and have 15 NHL-caliber forwards on the roster — not counting Holmstrom.

But that doesn’t faze him.

“I think so,” said Holmstrom, when asked if he believes there’s still room for him. “If I play my game, play my role, I know I can help this team.

“It’s great to see Sammy (Samuelsson) back, he’s going to help our team. And you need a guy like Tootoo, a disturber, a guy who can get in the other team’s face. Those guys will help.”

I doubt that there will be any room for the legendary Wings forward however, if he would accept a two-way contract I could see him coming back. If healthy, he could be a nice addition during the playoffs and would help the young Griffins in the AHL. However, It is highly doubtful that he would accept a two-way contract and it still seems that Tomas Holmstrom has playing his last hockey in the winged wheel. Some sites including Swedish newspaper Piteå-Tidningen [2] already believe that the Wings have made a decision that he won’t return and according to recent quotes by Ken Holland it seems very much so.

Regardless of what happens he will be one of my all-time favorite players that has ever played for the Wings.
