With Ryan Dempster increasing his scoreless innings streak to 33, the Chicago Cubs take game two against the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-1 Saturday afternoon. A trade involving Dempster seems inevitable, but he continues to put on a show in a Cubs uniform. Today he went six innings with four hits, five strikeouts, and three walks. Dempster has a league best 1.86 ERA. The Chicago Cubs have now won 11 out of their last 15 games, and are in fifth place in the NL Central. Carlos Marmol was able to record the save, making it 9 successful saves out of his last 11 opportunities. Starlin Castro, Darwin Barney, and Luis Valbuena contributed with three combined RBIs.
In Dempster’s first nine starts, the Cubs were 2-7, with Dempster posting an ERA of 2.90. The Cubs hitters were only scoring 2.9 runs per game as well. During Dempster’s record streak, the Cubs are 5-0, scoring almost seven runs per contest. It has certainly been a balanced effort from the Cubs, and it’s resulting in quality wins.
After wining the first three games of the season series against the Cubs, the Diamondbacks have lost two straight against the North Siders, scoring a combined two runs in this series. The Diamondbacks have lost 8 out of their last 11 games, and are quickly going in the wrong direction in the playoff race out west. Chris Young gave Arizona their only run with a solo shot in the seventh inning. The Diamondbacks will be looking avoid the series sweep Sunday afternoon at Wrigley Field.
