Dodgers Drop Their 4th in a Row Losing to the Phillies

We’re only five games removed from the all-star break, but you can sense that the Dodgers season is slowly slipping away. After winning their first game after the break, the Dodgers have now lost four in a row and 19 out of their last 25, following their 3-2 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies last night at Dodger Stadium. Combined with the San Francisco Giants 9-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves, the Dodgers now find themselves three games out of first place. Jeremy Horst picked the win for the Phillies, while Ronald Belisario suffered the loss for the Dodgers.
It was another frustrating defeat for the Dodgers. They lost to the San Diego Padres last Saturday after allowing Everth Cabrera to steal home with Will Venable scoring the winning run on a throwing error. They then lost Sunday to the same Padres while committing five errors. Last night’s collapse can be blamed on the bullpen, usually a strength. Cruising with a 2-1 lead, Belisario came in the eighth inning a proceed to retire Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino, who have served as thorns in the Dodgers side for the past few years. Then, inexplicably, he lost control. He walked Chase Utley on four pitches and then hit Ryan Howard and Carlos Ruiz to load the bases. Closer Kenley Jansen was summoned an inning earlier than usual and gave up two-run single to Hunter Pence to put the Phillies up 3-2, and that was all she wrote.
Stephen Fife, making his first major league start, pitched admirably in his debut. He was in line for the victory, only giving up one run on four hits, but the bullpen let him down. Things were looking really good for the Dodgers as they battered Phillie starter in the second inning. They collected four hits in a row and had the bases loaded with nobody out, but they only collected two runs in the inning. After that, the offense stalled, as usual.
Something needs to be done as the losses keep mounting and the Giants keep winning. It is crucial for the Dodgers to not let the season escape from their grasp. With the trade deadline approaching, the Dodgers are in dire need of a spark. The dreaded injury bug keeps rearing it’s ugly head. They got two of their stars back in Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier. However, starting pitcher Chad Billingsley was put on the 15 day disable list due to shoulder soreness. Combined with Dee Gordon and Ted Lilly, it seems as if the Dodgers can never get back on track.
Regardless, something needs to be done. Manager Don Mattingly may need to light a fire under this team as the laid-back approach may not be what this team needs going forward. There’s still plenty of time and the Dodgers are still in the thick of things so they better get things in gear before this once dream season turns into a nightmare.
