Wins and home runs are good, but the Orioles aren’t O “K”

The Orioles despite winning tonight’s game versus the Indians by a score of 3-1, have still been horrific with how many times they strikeout. Three of their everyday players are on pace to have near one hundred and fifty strikeouts by the end of the season (Chris Davis-90, Mark Reynolds-83, and Wilson Betemit-78). In tonights game, Oriole batters struck out nine times against Indians pitching, which is one-third of the outs in a game. You cannot keep counting on continuing to win games with that percentage of your outs coming without putting the ball in play.
Orioles Jim Thome and Ryan Flaherty both went yard for the second time in the last two games. Thome hit his 611th career home run giving the O’s the lead in the seventh inning, he moved out of a tie with Sammy Sosa in last night’s game for seventh all-time of the career home run list and he’s twenty-nine short of catching Ken Griffey Jr for sixth. Orioles manager Buck Showalter said that Thome has really become an influence on the younger members of the O’s. An example of this was when after his home run he was seen in the duggout having a conversation with new Oriole Ryan Flaherty who at his next at-bat hit a solo homer after the conversation to give the O’s an insurance run.
Another Orioles player who had a spectacular game was pitcher Chris Tillman. Tillman, who was coming off the worst start of his career against the Twins on July 16th, not getting out of the first inning and giving up seven runs. Tonight he earned the win and moves to 2-1 on the year. The question now is can Tillman get off this roller coaster of good start-bad start-good start and become more consistent?
Tonight’s win is the Orioles fourth in a row which is the first time the O’s have had winning streak of four or more game since early June. The Orioles play the Indians tomorrow at 3:05 pm and will send Zach Britton to the mound.
