Dodgers Sweep Their Way Past the Mets

It took 12 innings, but the Dodgers accomplished something they haven’t done in 10 years: they swept the New York Mets on the road. Matt Treanor hit a two-out, two-run bases-loaded single to break the 3-3 stalemate in the 12th to lead the Dodgers to an 8-3 victory over the Mets at Citi Field. Rookie Josh Wall (1-0), making his first major league appearance, pitched a scoreless 11th inning earning his first major league victory in the process. Ramon Ramirez (2-2) took the loss for Mets, after being charged with all five runs the Dodgers scored in the ninth inning.
The Dodgers improved to 52-44 while moving within a game and a half of the first place San Francisco Giants, winning their fourth in a row. The Dodgers jumped out ahead in the fourth inning behind Juan Rivera’s two-run homer off of Mets starters Jon Niese. The Mets immediately answered back in the bottom of the inning, cutting the lead in half after catcher Josh Thole’s RBI single to center that scored Daniel Murphy off of Dodgers starter, Nathan Eovaldi.
The Dodgers tacked on a run in the sixth, thanks in part to some alert base running by Mark Ellis. After getting aboard on an infield single, he advanced to second on a deep fly ball by Matt Kemp to center. He subsequently came home on an Andre Ethier single to left. The Mets cut the lead to 3-2 in the seventh, though it didn’t come without some controversy. With two out, Dodgers pitcher Shawn Tolleson struck out Ike Davis for what looked like final out of the inning. However third base umpire, James Hoye, ruled that the pitch was foul-tipped at the plate, much to the chagrin of Dodgers mananger, Don Mattingly. Davis, taking full advantage of his new life given at the plate, promptly doubled to right field and then scored on a bloop-single by Murphy, cutting the lead to one run.
After a scoreless eighth, former closer Javy Guerra was summoned in to preserve the victory for the Dodgers. The Mets, however, had other ideas. Ruben Tejada led the inning of with a single, and was bunted over to second by Jordany Valdespin. After an infield single by David Wright advanced Tejada the third, the Mets had runners on first and third with only one out. Davis then hit a soft ground ball to James Loney who may have had a play at the plate had he not bobbled the ball. His only play was to first, where the throw just barely beat the speeding Davis, although replays showed that Davis did beat the throw. The Dodgers managed to get out of the inning without any further damage done, which set up the heroics of Treanor in the 12th inning.
The Dodgers now head to St. Louis to begin a four game series against Mike Matheny and the Cardinals (50-45). They will send Chad Billingsley (4-9) to the mound, following his stint on the 15-day disabled list. He will go up against Joe Kelly (1-2).
