Rick Nash A New York Ranger

According to ESPN.com and Steve Zipay of Newsday, The New York Rangers and Columbus Blue Jackets have completed a deal that will send Rick Nash to Broadway.

In exchange for Nash the Rangers gave Columbus Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov, highly touted prospect Tim Erixion, and a first round draft pick next year. Columbus also gave the Rangers a minor league defenseman prospect and a conditional pick.

The Rick Nash saga has been one of the more interesting story lines of the last six months. Last February the two teams were engaged in trade talks however the Rangers G.M., Glen Sather, felt

that Columbus’ Scott Howson’s demands were too high. Almost immediately after the Rangers playoff run ended the two sides started up again. If your a Rangers fan, much credit must be given to Sather as he told reporters he would not do any deal that involved Chris Kreider, Michael Del Zotto,Ryan McDonagh or Derek Stepan and he stayed true to that promise. He was able to bid his time, waiting until other big name players had been scooped up by teams. This made the market for Nash considerably smaller, on top of the fact that Nash already had a no trade clause in his contract.

The Rangers in a sense killed two birds with one stone on this deal. With star Marian Gaborik out until likely December, the Rangers have found a way to cover the loss of scoring he provided. However, the downfall of the Rangers in the post season was the lack of secondary scoring. Nash helps add this element when Gaborik returns. That is what can make the Rangers a scary team come next spring.

One Aspect that should give Rangers fans pause however, Rick Nash is 28 and now the highest paid player on your team for at least the next six years which could handicap the Rangers in future seasons.

New York may not even be done after this. Rumor is that the Rangers are still looking into signing Shane Doan.

As always, comment with your thoughts!
