Dirty Bird Blog: Hammered in Hamilton

I don’t advocate abusing alcohol in any way, shape or form. I do advocate having a good time, however. Sometimes the two do coincide and some wonderful memories are the end result. Alcohol can cause a lot of pain and can dull a lot of pain. A handy thing, especially after having to endure the Hamilton faithful after the Tiger-Cats cruised to a 39-24 victory over the Montreal Alouettes last Saturday evening.

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to live-tweet the game like I normally do.  Sadly, it didn’t feel like I had missed very much. Montreal played their game, but Henry Burris coolly disassembled the new defence and once again, special teams was our Achilles heel. I think it’s time for Coach Trestman to relieve ST coach Andy Bischoff of his duties.

Fans constantly complain that we don’t have a great returner and that’s why we get constantly owned on special teams. I daresay it’s due to the fcat that Bischoff hasn’t devised anything creative in a long time and it’s painfully evident with each game where we allow tons of return yardage and subsequent TDs.

I understand that Trestman is loyal to a fault with his coaching staff, but the time has come to allow Bischoff to deal with another facet of coaching on this team and bring in a coach whose sole function is special teams. The Alouettes interviewed Mike O’Shea during the off-season and I wish I knew what was the stumbling block that prevented him from joining the Alouettes’ coaching staff.

The Alouettes can get back on track this Friday at home, where they are currently undefeated, versus the Argonauts. It will be an emotional homecoming for Scott Milanovich & Etienne Boulay, both formerly of the Alouettes.  No doubt they will want to show up their former team in the house they helped build into a nest of championships.

Former special teams star Walter Spencer may also make his debut in double-blue versus his former team.  He, Kerry Carter & Kitwana Jones were big on special teams and curiously, all three no longer play for Montreal.

For true football fans, there’s nothing like the tailgate experience. I was able to participate alongside the fine gents from LesGarsQuiVivent.com [1] who set up for their 3rd annual tailgate on the road in Hamilton. We all mingled with the Tiger-Cats fans, exchanged some good-natured ribbing in defense of our teams and cooked up some amazing food. The Box J boys grilled up some sausages & fried plantains, other fans had grilled corn on the cob & ribs while we countered with delicious marinated steak, pork & my contribution of ancho-tequila chicken thighs.

The beer and tequila flowed like wine and suffice to say, our contingent was feeling no pain throughout the afternoon into the evening. At least not until the end of the fourth quarter. Regardless of the final tally of the football game, a good time was had by all.

It’s a shame that some stadiums don’t allow tailgating, as it’s a great way to make new friends and share in the love of football & food cooked over an open flame.  If your CFL team allows it, take full advantage of it!

Keeping it short and sweet this time….make sure no matter how you watch the game, you surround yourself with friends, loved ones and great grub!

Hope to see everyone this Friday at Percival Molson Stadium! Time to get back on the winning track.
