Cleveland “squeeze” a win over Detroit, Does this mean there a chance of Playoffs??

Cleveland managed to pull a proverbial rabbit out of the hat today against Detroit to come away with the spoils. The scorebook will say the score was 3 – 2 in favour of the Tribe today and Joe Smith takes the win and Doug Fister charged with the loss but those who watched today will tell a slightly different story.
Ubaldo Jiminez pitched 6 scoreless innings today in one of his better showings of recent memory. In Ubaldo’s 6 innings of work he gave up 7 hits, 2 walk and walked away with 4 strikeouts and handed over the game to Joe Smith in the 7th with a tidy 2 run lead. Even more surprising is that he gave up a lead runner to in 5 of his 6 innings and managed to pitch around the runners on base, inducing only one double play and he definitely looked in line for the win.
The start of the seventh looked good for Joe Smith getting 2 ground ball outs to begin the inning. Then with a full count home plate umpire Marvin Hudson called a ball down the centre belt high ball four to walk Quintin Berry and bring Miguel Cabrera to the plate. Sure enough Cabrera blasted a ball to centre field and tie the game stealing a win from Ubaldo and giving him his 3rd no decision on the season leaving him with 8 wins 9 losses. Smith would bounce back and Prince Fielder grounded out to second to end the inning for Detroit.
Cleveland would start the bottom of the 7th with a fly out to left field off the bat of Santana who has hopefully put that slump behind him now. Travis Hafner followed up with a line drive off the wall at left centre that should have been cut to a double but left fielder Quintin Berry and centre fielder Austin Jackson would make the little league error of no talk and both attempted to make the catch at the wall. Some good base running from Travis Hafner noticing the error rounded 2nd and was safe at third and then taken from the field for pinch runner Lou Marson. The dreaded runner at third less than 2 outs looked to have raised its ugly head again with the defensive upgrade for Johnny Damon left fielder Aaron Cunningham, Who had been brought in at the start of the inning up to bat. Cunningham who is batting .175 for the season and 7 RBI’s from 97 AB’s laid down a suicide squeeze bunt back towards the pitcher Doug Fister. Fister’s throw would miss its mark and score Marson also allowing Cunningham to make it to 2nd. Fister would then sit down Kotchman and Hannahan to end the inning and his day on the bump. Fister finished with 7 innings, 9 hits, 3 Earned runs, 1 walk and 4 strikeouts earning him the loss.
Pestano would pitch the 8th not as flawless as normal giving up 1 hit and 1 walk but no runs, and Chris Perez was Chris Perez 3 up 3 down to put another save to his name.
Batting today was good for Cleveland today with only Casey Kotchman not making it to base today and Sin-Soo Choo the only other batter not to reach base on a hit. Johnny Damon drew first blood today scoring Santana in the 2nd inning on a one out single to centre. Santana would knock in Jason Kipnis on his single to right with one down in the 4th.
Leading the way with the bat today was Asdrubal Cabrera going 3 from 4 with a double. Other notable performances with the bat today were Carlos Santana going 2 from 3 with an RBI and a run scored, Travis Hafner’s triple was his only hit from 3 attempts, and Jason Kipnis’s double to left that he would later score on in the 4th was his only time on base from 4 try’s he also grounded into a double in the 6th.
So Cleveland have a win over the inform Detroit Tigers, they bat through the line-up play some small ball, come through with runners in scoring position, Masterson and Jiminez go back to back with good starts are we there? Does this mean the Tribe are ready to march into October winners of the AL Central?
NO of course it doesn’t Doug Fister wasn’t bad for Doug Fister he did exactly what his season stats would expect him too. His ERA of 4.03 and WHIP of 1.27 Cleveland did just what they should be expected too. Cleveland did bat better than they have recently but they have been awful with the way they have played there lucky they are even within a sniff of the leaders this year. The Starting pitching has been hot and cold to say the least and if it wasn’t for Pestano and Perez locking down the back end of games they could be in a lot more trouble. To really consider Cleveland a pennant chance they need to get it done more consistently. I need to see a streak of wins that isn’t backed up with a longer streak of losses before I get too excited about October. With that said I like to finish on a positive note with Cabrera and Santana swinging a more confident bat we should start to see some more run support up the top of the line up if Choo, Kipnis and Brantley can keep finding there way on base I am definitely not saying the season is lost. I do think the Tribe can turn it around but I haven’t seen enough yet to say that they have.
To finish my blogs from now on I will give one player from each game a Gold Star and one a Ticket to the Minors.
GOLD STAR: Ubaldo Jiminez so at least his 6 scoreless innings wont go un-noticed same may even say this is better than a win, he has set a record being the first player to get a Gold star from the un-known blogger Luke Lovekin.
TICKET TO THE MINORS: Home Plate Umpire Marvin Hudson for that horrible ball 4 call that gave Detroit the extra at bat that resulted in a 2 run bomb.
