Gonzalez shines in first game facing the Yankees

Orioles starting pitcher Miguel Gonzalez has had an up and down season so far, mostly down in these past few weeks, so him taking the mound for the first time ever against the first place Yankees would seem a little scary. Gonzalez’ last start against the Rays was a train wreck as he only two and two-thirds innings, gave up seven earned runs on seven hits and two wild pitches. But he would redeem himself from this earning the win tonight in New York by a score of 5-4.

Gonzalez went six and two-thirds innings, gave up six hits, four earned runs and a career high eight strikeouts. In this game he caused multi-strikeout games for Yankees such as: Mark Teixeira (3), Curits Granderson (2), Nick Swisher (2), and Raul Ibanez (2). He did however give up three homers (all of them solo home runs) including two back-to-back ones in the seventh which caused O’s manager Buck Showalter to take him out of the game. Why did Gonzalez give up those back-to-back homers? Was he really tired? Did they keep him in the game too long? Too many pitches? He did throw a total of 111 pitches.

In other notes the O’s did not strikeout as much as they normally do, tonight they only struck out five times. Nick Markakis has really stepped up as a lead-off hitter hitting .365 and a .900 on-base plus slugging percentage since coming off the disabled list. Every Oriole that batted had a hit tonight except Lew Ford who went 0-4 in the game.

Yankees starter Freddy Garcia earned the loss in this game and now goes to a 6-8 record versus the O’s in his career. Jim Johnson received his 31st save of the year in a shakey outing tonight giving up a lead-off double and a walk. Tomorrow’s game will be at 7:05 pm, pitchers will be Chris Tillman (BAL) 3-1 1.66 ERA vs. Ivan Nova (NYY) 10-4 4.08 ERA.
