Al Groh, Romeo Crennel, Josh McDaniels, Eric Mangini, Nich Saban, and Jim Schwartz all coached under Bill Belichick. No Super Bowl rings were received, five of the six were fired( one twice), and only two coach a team today. But none of that matters because Bill Belichick is, and has been for a while, the most feared coach in the NFL.
It was known throughout the NFL that the Patriots defense was weak last year. QB’s threw all over them and no one feared them. Then they faced the best defense in the NFL in the AFC championship and Tom Brady looked more like Tim Tebow. He had a rating of 57 and threw two INTs and no TDs. And the Patriots won. Belichick is nothing short of a genius for getting past this game. Vince Lombardi never never did this, but he did do other amazing things.
Lombardi did things that seem impossible. He is the creator of “Running for the daylight.” Or a blocker blocking a place and not a person. He was named coach of the year in his rookie head coaching year and suffered only one championship loss. He racked up nine championships as a Head Coach and was invited by Kennedy to coach at Air Force. Now his name is on the championship trophy, but Michael Irvin is calling Lombardi’s stats out and saying that Belichick deserves to share his name on the championship trophy.
While the Lombardi/Belichick trophy does have a nice ring to it, it is the stats that count. Belichick has five Super Bowl rings, but only three as the head coach. He has many losing seasons, but only one with the Patriots. He has also made unique history like Lombardi. His defensive game plan from Super Bowl XXV is in the NFL Hall of Fame. Quite a unique part of a head coach’s resume. He also has lost a few championship games, primarily to Eli Manning.
These are both impressive resumes. Of course, it is near impossible to match the nine championships, but it was quicker and easier to be a champion back in the day because there were less teams. Belichick did take Lombardi’s record for straight postseason wins, 9 to 10. But as a pure head coach Lombardi cannot be matched. Belichick deserves to win a few more Lombardi trophies, but not change the name.
Lombardi represents more than just a championship or a trophy, but how the NFL should be represented. He was a religious man who straight up told his players they will not loose another championship game. He pushed his players bodies and his own mind. He showed that even the man on the sidelines could be strong and. No matter how much I love Belichick, he does not represent the NFL like Lombardi.
Belichick quit with a note. He is soft spoken and his style is more about finesse. Of course he knows how to get down and dirty, but nothing like Lombardi. His face is just not right and his voice does not speak the right way. But I am fine with him keeping his head down while he wins championships. Maybe after Bill hits 10 rings we can talk change.
