Cain Unable to Slow Down Streaking Cards

The Cardinals defeated Matt Cain and the San Francisco Giants on Monday behind another stellar pitching performance. Jake Westbrook pitched six strong innings, holding the Giants to two runs and improving his record on the season to 11-8. The Cardinals’ pitching staff has been lights-out during their current winning streak, surrendering a mere six runs over the last four games. Westbrook struck out four batters without issuing a walk, and he extended his streak of starts with six or more innings pitched to 11 games. He was efficient with his pitches, throwing only 79 to get through six innings.
The Cardinals’ offense proved too much for Giants’ ace Matt Cain. He labored through 5.2 innings, allowing eight hits and five earned runs. With his 114th and final pitch, Cain allowed a two-run, two out single to pinch-hitter Matt Carpenter, who had entered the game for Westbrook. The Cardinals continued to pad their lead in the seventh, as Jon Jay came up to bat with the bases loaded and delivered his fourth single of the game, driving home two more runs.
St. Louis now stands at 60-49, eleven games above five-hundred for the first time this season. They are now only 2.5 games behind both Pittsburgh and Atlanta in the National League Wild Card race. Lance Lynn takes on Barry Zito later today as the Cardinals look to continue their winning ways.
