Giants planning on splitting carries?

New York Giants fans got their first true look at rookie running back David Wilson on Friday during the Giants first preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Wilson has been a shining star in camp, but the staff of the Giants really wanted to see how he would perform in game time situations. Boy did he deliver. Wilson came up strong rushing seven times for 43 yards. He also added special teams help while returning a kickoff 48 yards.
Don’t be so quick to think that the Giants will sign Wilson off as the backup to starter Ahmad Bradshaw. Bradshaw is the undisputed number one on this team. But the Giants love what they have in other backup running backs D.J. Ware, Andre Brown and Da’Rel Scott. It is not a secret that Wilson has the speed and quickness to become a great running back. The Giants drafted him to become Bradshaw’s backup and eventually take over as the full time back. Wilson’s speed, elusiveness and playmaking ability will be hard to keep off the field. The real question is can he protect Eli Manning?
That question goes out to all the running backs. Scott is a speedster, Ware is an excellent pass catcher, and Brown hasn’t seen the field much. The biggest thing the Giants need to worry about is protecting their franchise quarterback. Running the ball effectively won’t be the only factor the Giants look for when contemplating over who becomes Bradshaw’s backup.
