Orioles starter Wei-Yin Chen and Red Sox starter Josh Beckett faced off tonight for the second time this season. In their first meeting back on June 6th the Orioles defeated the Red Sox 2-1, Chen earned the win and Beckett earned the loss. Chen went seven innings, and gave up seven hits and only one run. Beckett lasted eight innings and gave up two runs. In Tonight’s game the O’s won by a score of 7-1 over the Red Sox.
Tonight’s game was Round 2 for these pitchers, and in Round 2 the O’s and Chen ended up the winners, and Beckett and the Red Sox ended up the losers in this game. Chen pitched six innings only giving up one run again earning his 11th win, but still gave up nine hits. On the other side Beckett earned the loss again, this time going five and one-third innings and giving up six runs on six hits. Beckett has now lost three of his last five starts and now falls to a record of 6-6 against the O’s in his career.
Another O’s milestone tonight was Mark Reynolds having a multi-home run game hitting two home runs and driving four RBI’s versus the Red Sox in this game. The first homer came off of Josh Beckett in the fifth inning for a solo home run, and the second homer came in the sixth inning which was a 3-run homer. This was “The Sheriff’s” first multi-home run game since September 21, 2011.
In other notes the Orioles newest rookie sensation and co-American League Player of the Week Manny Machado, who previously hit three home runs in his first four games went 0-3 tonight. For Boston: They are now 7-13 on the year whenever they have a right-handed pitcher on the mound. The O’s and Sox play again in this three game series same time, same place, and pithcers are Gonzalez (BAL) and Cook (BOS).
