Before the start of last season, Vince Young (now with Buffalo Bills) proclaimed the Philadelphia Eagles the “Dream Team” of the National Football League (we all know how that went). This past off-season quarterback Michael Vick said he feels the Eagles were capable of becoming a “Dynasty”. My take on this… How about reaching the playoffs before making “Dynasty” comments Mike.
To say that last season was a bust for the Philadelphia Eagles would be an understatement. So much attention and admiration was given to the Eagles at the start of last season that it seemed to be a foregone conclusion that they would run the table in the NFC east. The Eagles struggled to stay healthy last year. Starting quarterback Michael Vick missed three games due to injury and the team ended their 2011 campaign with an embarrassing 8-8 record. They failed to make the playoffs and watched as their division rival New York Giants won a second Superbowl championship in five seasons.
This season will again bring high expectations for the Eagles. They remain one of the most explosive and dynamic offensive teams in the league and will need their play makers to step up. Second year defensive coordinator Juan Castillo will look to build on a season that saw some ups and downs for the Eagles defense.
The Eagles have had some early adversities to overcome thus far in 2012. Early in Eagles training camp the son of Head Coach Andy Reid was found dead. The situation shook the entire organization but the team has rallied around the Reid family and has dedicated this upcoming season to Garrett Reid.
In their preseason opener against the Pittsburg Steelers Micheal Vick hurt his thumb when he slammed it against a helmet throwing a pass and just this past week cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha was in a brutal collision during practice that resulted in what some thought was a concussion, but was later ruled whiplash. Other notable Eagle starters Brent Celek (TE), Jayson Babin (DE), Trent Cole (DE) have also had early camp injuries.
With all of the expectations that have been bestowed upon the Philadelphia Eagles, a repeat performance from a year ago would surely mean jobs lost and the hot seat for head coach Andy Reid. The organization has invested time and money into Reid and his players. With all the talent in the Eagles locker room it’s about time those investments begin to pay off.
Quarterback Michael Vick has come along way and it should be noted that he has made great strides to improve his way of life. With that said it is time for Vick to finally take the next step in his football career. Vick was compensated very generously by the Eagles organization and it is certainly time for him to get it done on the field.
Last season the “Dream Team” didn’t live up to the expectations they casted on themselves. This season we’ll see if Michael Vick can lead this team to the playoffs and make good on his “Dynasty” comments. Sure the Eagles have the talent to be a Dynasty, no one questions that, but in order to be considered a Dynasty you have to win a TITLE first.
