Cardinals Lose Brown to Torn Triceps, Kolb Gets Called Out

The Cardinals may have beaten the Raiders 31-27 on Friday night, but they certainly weren’t feeling like winners when the game was over. Sure they won a meaningless exhibition game, but they also lost their starting offensive tackle Levi Brown for what looks like the whole season to torn triceps. On top of that, Kevin Kolb continued to look squeamish and his play even prompted Raiders defensive tackle Tommy Kelly to say that Kolb looked “scared and skittish”. And if all of that wasn’t enough, a man (now in stable condition) was shot in the parking lot of the stadium. This game was in Arizona mind you, not Oakland’s notorious Black Hole. Got to love the recent preseasons in Arizona, where seasons can be lost & not won and choosing your starting Quarterback is like choosing between a giant douche and a turd sandwich for president. Last year it was Ryan Williams who went down, this year it was Brown, both were/are integral parts of the offense.
To John Skelton’s credit, he played well and threw a touchdown, something neither him or Kolb had yet to do so far. Skelton has also shown the ability to drive the offense up the field this preseason and we already know he isn’t scared to step up and make a throw, despite the risks involved. Kolb unfortunately hasn’t been able to put the offense in positions to succeed so far. I don’t think Kelly, who sacked Kolb for a safety in the 1st quarter, should have called him scared after the game and Kolb had a right to be upset when hearing about it. However, its gotten to the point with Kolb where you just want to say, “Dude either step up and make some throws or shut up and sit down.” Harsh outlook, but Arizona gave up so much for him that the fans are starting to feel the same way Bostonians feel about Carl Crawford. (Crawford has a $150 million contract and has been a huge disappointment so far for the Red Sox.) Kolb hasn’t done anything to deserve the starting job yet, and its looking more certain every game that Skelton will start week 1.
The loss of Levi Brown is a huge blow to this team. The offensive line has always been a work in progress and he was expected to be a cornerstone of it this year. Brown is a former top draft pick and will be greatly missed this season, although there is a slim chance he can return near the end of it. The return of RBs Ryan Williams & Beanie Wells and the emergence of backups Alfonso Smith and WIlliam Powell have to feel somewhat bittersweet after losing one of the big guys up front who protects them. It is too bad Russ Grim can’t switch from coach to player, because the O-line could sure use a player like him right now. Rookie WR Michael Floyd has yet to make an impact this preseason, but the feeling inside is still very high on him. Hopefully by going with Skelton as the QB the receivers can start developing a better rapport with him before the season starts.
Watch and see if the line can move forward and grow beginning this Thursday against the Titans at 5 P.M.
