New York Giants defeat the New York Jets 26-3 in the Metlife Bowl

Well, what a game that was. Who else thinks those referees are atrocious? They constantly missed calls and missed two helmet to helmet collisions. At one point during a holding penalty on a punt, the referees had no idea how much distance to knock off for the penalty. Was it five yards? 10 yards? It took them four tries to finally get the right call. At what point does the NFL give in and give the referees the money they deserve?
For those of you who stayed and watched the whole thing, the Giants have as much depth as any team in the league. The offense looked miserable at times, but the defense was the real story of the game. I was able to enjoy the game at a new place called Boom burger. Pretty good, but not great. Besides the fact, the New York Jets made all of the preseason noise, but the Giants reminded Rex Ryan and the Jets who the defending champs are and who owns this city.
It’s just the preseason, but the Giants defense looked as if they are in midseason form. Jason Pierre-Paul looked incredible and had two sacks. Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora both added half a sack. The Giants had a constant stream of pressure and the Jets offensive line could not handle it. Linval Joseph and Rocky Bernard started at defensive tackle and both were huge stepping up and stopping the run. Markus Kuhn was also very active and impactful. The Giants dominated short yardage situations. Prince Amukamara avenged his miserable performance from last week by shutting down the Jets receivers. Corey Webster was impactful and rookie Jayron hosley was huge on punt returns, in coverage and rushing the passer. He came up big with a 77-yard interception returned for a touchdown off of Mark Sanchez. However Hosley was spotted in a walking boot after the game. The biggest surprise and star of the game was rookie Will Hill who is fighting for a roster spot. After tonight’s game he may be a lock on this roster. He showed immense talent in coverage and rushing the passer.
Victor Cruz did not have a 99-yard touchdown catch, but he just missed out on catching a bomb during the first play by the Giants offense. The Giants came out with confidence and targeted Darrelle Revis right out of the gate. Eli Manning misguided the throw even though Cruz breezed by Revis. Cruz was targeted often and came away with five receptions for 51 yards. He took some big hits during the game, one coming from LaRon Landry. Manning and Cruz’s chemistry continues to strengthen with Hakeem Nicks sidelined.
The running game was not great. Neither was the offensive line. The running game can only be as good as the offensive line blocks. At this point it looks as if Manning is going to have to throw the ball a lot this season. With Bradshaw leaving the game early with a hand injury, it was up to the backups to take over. D.J. Ware took over for Bradshaw and finished with 11 yards on 15 carries. Andre Brown started the third and had two carries for five yards. David Wilson came in and had eight carries for 26 yards. It was not a great night for the Giants running game. This group needs some help and fast.
Eli Manning was throwing darts early in the game and connected on some very nice throws. He however had an old Eli throw. It was on a throw intended for Reuben Randle, the Giants second round pick. It was hard to tell if Randle ran the wrong route or if Manning just over threw him.
The Giants had to settle for four field goals because the offense could not get anything going. Lawrence Tynes looked good hitting all four of his field goal attempts.
The Giants play the Chicago Bears (1-1) next Friday night at home for their third preseason game. I will be at that game bringing you all the updates on site.
